KRISS Vector .45 caliber submachine & other guns

As I mentioned previously, the KRISS booth was pretty impressive. They had lots of Sphinx pistols on display, as well as Defiance suppressors and pistol sights. Last but not least, they also had the KRISS Vector .45 caliber submachine gun. Before I continue, let me say that they do not refer to it as the “Super V” and do not like it to be referred to as such. Calling it the Super V almost cost me some free Swiss chocolate!

They’re coming out with 9mm and .40 S&W versions of the Vector “soon.” I think these might be better sellers than the .45, for various reasons. Civilian shooters will probably like the lower cost of shooting 9mm, while LE agencies might be more interested in an SMG that takes the same magazines as the prolific Glock 22 in .40 S&W.

I’m not sold on the general or wide use of SMGs when rifle caliber weapons are often the same size, but I do see definite niche applications for weapons like the Vector and its derivatives. I commented to Christophe that the pistol version of the Vector could probably be shot very effectively with the weapon slung “Euro style.”

Also, KRISS had their new prototype SMG on display, which featured a number of changes and improvements over the Vector. It’s featured towards the end of this video.

MP7 in Afganistan

Michael Yon posted on his Facebook page this photo of a German Solider's H&K MP7 in Afghanistan.

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150251806090665&set=a.235978145664.135781.207730000664&type=1&ref=nf

When I got my hands on a real MP7 for the first time I was surprised how large it was. Compare the size of it with the pistol the solider has on his right thigh.

More MP7 in Afganistan

After I posted a photo of a German Soldier's MP7 taken Afghanistan, readers emailed in more photos of the MP7 in Afghanistan. The first shows an MP7 being used by a Viking Norwegian IEDD/EOD specialist. The MP7's very low recoil, high rate of fire and penetration make it the ideal weapon for a IED specialist, much better than the Beretta M9 we saw used in the Hurt Locker movie. The second photo is of two Bundeswehr soldiers in Afghanistan. The solider on the right is carrying the standard H&K G36

Australian Federal Police evaluating KRISS Vector SMG

Security Scholar reports that the Australian Federal Police tactical response teams are evaluating the KRISS Vector SMG.

http://securityscholar.wordpress.com/2011/09/22/kriss-vector-smg-for-the-australian-federal-police/

It came to my attention whilst talking to a KRISS representative in Las Vegas that the Australian Federal Police (AFP) had – and presumably were continuing – to test and evaluate (T&E) the Vector SMG. A few phone calls revealed, as expected, that the weapon was being evaluated by the Operational Readiness Group (ORG) for use by their Tactical Response Teams (TRTs). The ORG TRTs provide tactical response options to all high-risk AFP operations nationally, and are often tasked to deploy overseas on peacekeeping missions as part of the International Deployment Group (IDG).

I have blogged about the KRISS Vector many times before. I have used both the civilian-legal carbine and the LEO/mil submachine gun. Both are a lot of fun to use and the initial problems reported when they were first introduced appear to have been fixed.

B&T APC9 Submachine Gun

Brügger & Thomet, who are best know for the B&T MP9 Submachine gun and TP9 Pistol, have developed a new 9mm submachine gun called the B&T APC9. This UZI-sized gun is very lightweight, fully ambidextrous, has quad rails and take MP9/TP9 magazines. B&T are marketing is as a package, with stocks, accessories and suppressors.

© Aurelien. Simular in looks and has similar design goals as the CZ Skorpion EVO III.

With submachine guns being replaced in the USA by carbines, and with PDW-style guns in Europe, I am pleased to see the classic 9mm sub-gun is not yet dead.

JP Factory 9mm SMG

A Filipino company named JP Factory, located in the Southern city of Bacolod, has developed a prototype submachine gun chambered in 9mm. It uses Glock magazines, has quad rails and a folding stock. Interestingly, it uses an AR-15 trigger mechanism.

Visiting to the Philippines and touring the many gun manufacturers over there is something I am very keen to do in the future. Quite a few of innovative guns are made for local shooters.

B&T MP45 and MP9N

Earlier this week I blogged about new Brügger & Thomet APC9. The company has also launched two new version of the MP9/TP9. The MP45, as the name suggests, is chambered in .45 ACP. The second is called the MP9N (N as in Nato) and has a few different internal parts and a new selector switch.

The Draco Pistol: Another NFA Hack?

Center Balanced Systems have updated their AK-style Draco Pistol from a conventional pistol design (in this case a stockless short barreled rifle) to a bullpup design. According to them the BATFE have stated that the new design is a pistol, not a short barreled rifle, and therefor does not fall under the NFA.

Just looking at it I cannot believe how the BATFE came to that conclusion. If it does not have a stock then I obviously do not know what a stock is. Center Balanced Systems have hacked the NFA to a greater degree than Franklin Armory with their Franklin Armory XO-26b.

If you buy this gun make sure you get a copy of the BATFE letter approving the design.

IWI to Make First Appearance of the UZI PRO at DefExpo, FIDAE and LAAD

March 19, 2012 16:11

IWI (Israel Weapon Industries) will showcase the newest UZI Submachine Gun (SMG), the 9mm UZI PRO, at DefExpo India 2012 (New Delhi, March 29-April 1) , FIDAE International Air & Space Fair (Santiago, Chile, March 27-April 1), and LAAD Security (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, April 10-12). These are the first appearances of the actual weapon at major exhibitions.

Developed in cooperation with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the 9 mm UZI PRO SMG is the newest member of the UZI family – one of the most popular weapon families in the world, with millions of units sold around the globe. Lightweight and compact, the UZI PRO is a solution for both concealed or openly carried use – for law enforcement, VIP protection and Special Forces.
Ergonomically designed and easy to use by right or left-handed users, it offers closed bolt operation for maximum accuracy and safety. With many of its components made of advanced polymeric materials, the UZI PRO’s features include Picatinny rails, ergonomic butt, built-in foldable assault handle and pistol-type magazine release button. It also provides a quick fitting suppressor (Photo at top), full auto and single shot and adjustable shoulder stock with mounted cheek rest.

According to Uri Amit, CEO of IWI, “We are happy to present the next generation UZI – possibly the best-known and most widely sold weapon family in the world – following meticulous development in cooperation with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Our goal was to incorporate the latest technological advances without compromising the extremely reliable, globally recognized UZI, in order to make it more ergonomic and user-friendly, and equipped to handle the full range of scenarios faced in modern warfare. This goal has been fully achieved. Despite our having only recently introduced it to the market, we are already seeing great interest expressed by our customers, and believe this year will see thousands of units being sold around the world .”

IWI is a member of the SK Group, which is composed of companies that develop and manufacture a wide array of military products for governmental entities, armies, and law enforcement agencies around the world. IWI’s most-known products include the TAVOR and GALIL ACE families of Assault Rifles, the NEGEV Light Machine Gun, the UZI SMG (Mini Micro and UZI PRO) and the JERICHO family of pistols.

A bit more on the PRO..............

Israel’s Newest UZI Sub Machine Gun

by Matthew Cox on May 17, 2012

Israel Weapon Industries recently released new video of its UZI PRO SMG. It’s based on the classic UZI design introduced more than 50 years ago, but it’s equipped with modern features and materials.

The UZI PRO, released last fall, still fires 9mm ammunition from the closed bolt and uses the same blow-back operating system as the original design. The PRO’s lower receiver, however, is polymer to reduce weight and is styled after the TAVOR assault-rifle family. The PRO also features a side-mounted charging handle to allow for a rail assembly on top of the weapon.

The PRO weighs 4.4 pounds unloaded and sports a 6-inch barrel. It’s 21 inches long with stock fully extended and just under 12 inches in its most compact form. The PRO uses a 25-round magazine and can be fired in semi-auto and full-auto mode. Its max rate of fire is 1050 rounds per minute. I still haven’t been able to find its max rate of fire.

While overshadowed by designs such as the HK MP5 and MP7, the original UZI SMG remains popular with about 10 million copies used in 90 countries.

IWI released its promotional video on the UZI PRO on May 14. It’s a little over-the-top, but still pretty cool. Fast-forward to the 50-second mark for the live-fire water test. It also includes footage on IWI’s MICRO UZI.
