Usually I put this stuff in the Future Soldier thread but this one is soooooo strange I'll put it in its own thread!

Slam Cam: Armor Suit Revisited

by christian on July 2, 2010

In a perennial favorite I revisit each Friday before the 4th of July, I wanted to revisit one of literally the most piss in your pants funny videos on all of YouTube.

Canadian inventor and mad scientist Troy Hurtubise designed an armor suit that eclipses anything Murray Neil, Allen Bain, PEO Soldier or DARPA could ever create in their ballistic labs. We learned two years ago that Troy’s suit may find its way into the Canadian army for use in Iraq and Afghanistan (though I think he might have forgotten that there never were any Canucks in Iraq).

Though Ward and I scoured the chow halls of Kandahar and its environs looked for Troy’s suit, we didn’t see one Canadian soldier wearing it, nor did we find any of our northern neighbors who’d even heard of it.

But Kit Up! has a suggestion on this steamy 4th. As we consider patriots like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and James Monroe, let’s consider other “patriots” out there who are willing to literally get smashed in the face with a swinging log to help their brethren in the fight for freedom (even if some of them are Canadian).

Have a great 4th and we’ll see you on the 6th..

Have a look at D30 in action...........it's a polymer but with unique characteristics, especially the fact it hardens instantly if struck. The possibility of enhancement for use as body armour appears to be possible?

Company link here........

You have heard of non-newtonian fluids, right? Terms like dilatency and thixotropic?

Polymers are a great candidate for this especially suspended particulate polymers. Hence the research in nano sized silicon and other materials to reinforce kevlar and BPFs.

Was it Archimedes who said "If you give me a lever and a place to stand, I can move the world"... You might like to say "If you make a ceramic behave like a non-newtonian fluid, you can stop anything".

So, if I was an Israeli Kabutz company and I placed ceramic beads into an elastomer, then applied a sudden shear force (KE) to said elastomer, what is to say those beads would not act like a shear thickening fluid?

cheers
