NATO: Roadmap To The Future
Posted by Robert Wall at 5/17/2010 4:39 AM CDT
The group of experts called together to help spell out how NATO should reform has today released its recommendations on what should be in the new strategic concept, the first since 1999.
Madeleine Albright, who headed the group of experts, says "some adjustments" are needed in NATO, but the recommendations stop short of calling for an overhaul of what is at the core of the alliance. Collective defense, for instance, remains the corner stone of the alliance.
But new threats from non-state actors are getting more attention.
Two areas that are getting special attention are cyber defesne and missile defense. The recommendations make clear the alliance needs to do more in both areas.
NATO also is urged to enhance cooperation with Russia and the EU, but also to reform its processes.
NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen will now take that input to create a first draft of the strategic concept, to be put before NATO members in Lisbon in November,
