First announced in January 2010, the joint venture between the Düsseldorf-based Rheinmetall Group and MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG can now take immediate effect following approval by the relevant competition authorities.

The expertise of both companies in wheeled tactical vehicles will flow directly into the newly founded company Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles GmbH (RMMV) of Munich.

The move creates a comprehensive supplier of wheeled tactical vehicles, capable of meeting the needs of the military at home and abroad for protected and unprotected transport, command and multifunctional vehicles. Rheinmetall holds a 51% stake in the company, with the remaining 49% held by MAN.

By bringing together Rheinmetall’s defence technology prowess with MAN’s longstanding experience in utility vehicles, RMMV makes an important contribution to the consolidation of the German and European market for military utility vehicles.

As a first step, the development and sales activities of both companies in the wheeled tactical vehicle sector will be transferred to RMMV effective 1 May 2010.

In a second contractually agreed step, the relevant production facilities of the partner companies will be integrated into the joint venture structure by the end of 2011, though they will remain at their present locations in Kassel, Germany (Rheinmetall) and Vienna, Austria (MAN).

During the first phase, RMMV will have approximately 370 employees; following completion of the second phase, the company’s staff will increase to around 1,300, with projected annual sales in excess of EUR 1 billion.

About 3½ months after signing a contract, Rheinmetall Group and MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG have received the go-ahead from competition authorities to form a joint company for military wheeled tactical vehicles.

Headquarted in Munich, the new Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles GmbH (RMMV) will be a comprehensive provider of wheeled military tactical vehicles, covering the entire range of protected and unprotected transport, command and role-specific vehicles. Rheinmetall holds a 51 percent stake in the company, and MAN holds 49 percent.

Effective May 1, the development and sales activities of both companies in the wheeled tactical vehicle sector were transferred to RMMV. In the second contractual agreed step, the relevant production facilities will be integrated into the joint venture structure by the end of 2011, even though they will remain at their present locations in Kassel, Germany, where Rheinmetall has a location, and Vienna, where MAN has one. RMMV will start with 370 employees, according to its owners, and but will grow to 1,300 at the end of 2011. The company is projected to gain annual sales in excess of one billion euros.

Besides the joint venture with MAN, the Rheinmetall Group has also recently taken up a majority share of Verseidag Ballistic Protection GmbH, aimed to become a complete supplier of protection systems for tactical vehicle manufacturers and car makers. In mid-April, it signed an accordant contract with Jagenberg AG to take over 51 percent of its 100 percent share. The products of the Krefeld, Germany-based company make it possible to protect the crews of civilian and military vehicles, aircraft and ships from ballistic threats and explosive devices.

The deal also needs approval from competition authorities. The companies of Verseidag's "Personal Protection" division, based in Finland and the U.S., will remain entirely in the ownership of Jagenberg.
