Availability Is Everything

Reflecting increasing industry focus on maintenance business, and Defense Ministry interest in maximizing availability, the UK’s WAH-64 Apache integrated operational support program is now in full operation.

The integrated operational support (IOS) package for the Apache - an availability-based contract - was awarded to AgustaWestland in September 2009. As part of the program AgustaWestland working with the Defense Ministry’s Apache Project Team – and industry partners Boeing and Lockheed Martin – has set up a “forward support team” at the Apache’s main operating and support base, Wattisham Airfield in the south east of England.

The UK Defense Ministry continues to look to industry to provide depth support for its fixed and rotary platforms as a potential means of cutting costs. During the initial IOS contract period until March 2014, the program is intended to deliver savings of 50 million pounds ($76 million). The Apache units are deployed on combat operations in Afghanistan.

The Defense Ministry has a long-term partnering agreement with AgustaWestland, an approach that resulted from the government’s 2005 Defense Industrial Strategy work. Securing through life support work is increasingly important to AgustaWestland in the UK given the comparative lack of future military helicopter procurement programs in the medium term. The company and the Defense Ministry are discussing a similar availability-based contract or the AW159 Lynx Wildcat now being developed for the British military.
