Smart Turks

Turkey is installing Smart-S Mk2 3D medium-range surface radars on a total of 10 of its warships. In cooperation with the radar's producer, Thales Nederland, Turkish defense electronics company Asalsan will manufacture the radar under license for eight FFG-7 frigate upgrades and one new-build MILGEM. Thales Nederland already sold its first Smart-S Mk2 to Turkey in 2007, also for a MILGEM.

The cooperation between the two companies, which also includes a Sting EO Mk2 system and subsystems from Thales, involves building the first three Smart-S Mk2s at Thales Nederland in Hengelo and the remaining five at Asalsan in Ankara, said Federiko Krommendijk, product account manager, surface radar, at Thales Nederland. Under transfer of knowledge and technology (TOKAT) from Thales Nederland to Asalsan, personnel from the Turkish company will receive on-the-job training at Hengelo. The TOKAT also includes technical support, production and testing equipment.

Krommendijk foresees the possibility of this model of cooperation being used to enter the US market. ITT installed a Smart-S Mk2 on the former USS Paul F Foster, a Spruance-class frigate being used as a self-defense test ship, at Port Hueneme, California, last August. Thales Nederland believes Smart-S Mk2 would be an ideal radar for the Littoral Combat Ship, including in the ballistic missile defense role.
